about

Hold your breath. You are about to witness the new era of electronic music from deep in the heart of Asia. After the groundbreaking debut EP ISLAND-01 released 2 months ago, the most experimental Singaporean musician Yllis is coming with another masterpiece, Exodus, on the Chinese Label Do Hits.

Yllis considers the EP as an attempt to explore his own cultural and historical roots as a Chinese Singaporean. Sonically, you won’t have difficulties spotting sounds and melodies of Singaporean characteristics - mostly cultural remnants scattered among the 5 delicate tracks. Starting with “夢 (Dream)”, a haunting female chanting takes you on a psychic trip to the Far East island state. The following “Bloom”“羞 (Shyness)”“Future Flowers” and “Lament” fully depict a wet dream resembling the Tales of Liaozhai. Do Hits label heads Howie Lee and Jason Hou also contributed their alternative manifestations of the feature track “夢 (Dream)”.

“A post-internet, post-globalized world view is empowering in that it enables us to take ownership and redefine what pop culture means, what ‘cool’ means.” With Exodus, Yllis sketches a dystopian futuristic landscape of human migration with a multitude of voices and energies bubbling and clashing against each other – just like a metaphor for the book of Exodus from the Bible.
